ARTIST STATEMENT

I’m always studying other painters. A lot of my paintings can look like other people’s paintings, and that’s because I’m trying to absorb and understand what they’re doing. In painting you can get into a cul-de-sac pretty easily where you end up painting a black square, or you can intellectualize it to a point where you reach a dead end. The challenge is to move around in that space and try to innovate. Style develops as a byproduct of working. You work your way through ideas. You put them on canvas. As you go, you learn techniques and how to use different mediums to get what you want.
