ARTIST STATEMENT

I have been making abstract paintings for nearly forty years. For most of that time I have been interested in geometry and repetition structures, but not for formal clarity or purity. I prefer a dirty, hand-painted geometry that conjures up perceptual consciousness the way music does.

The paintings in this show all began with drawings of grids and overlapping linear structures. Following simple procedural rules, I re-trace the drawings with repeated rectangles that intersect to form shifting connections and unpredictable configurations. Although they begin with plans and rules, it is the layering of paint and color that carries each work towards a complexity that is discovered rather than designed. The resulting space is one that continuously expands, collapses, and reconfigures, circulating and breathing through the surface of the painting, hovering above and below, in front and behind. The geometry becomes organic and alive. There is music in there somewhere.
