ARTIST STATEMENT

“My work operates on methodologies that connect geological landscapes to native rituals, tying the spiritual realm to the scientific. The work expresses a connection with landscape and the presence of something far wiser – geological time over millions of years.

With a response to environment, my practice is imbued with scientific investigation. Stories of people and land are articulated through sculptures – casted minerals, rocks, and hands.

Mojave Miner’s Mask

In “Hiking the Mojave Desert”, Michel Digonnet refers to the mining history of the Mojave as the “the greatest human adventure this desert ever saw.” “Miner’s Mask” marks a moment in time where greed, wealth and power drove prospectors out west to reap precious bounty from the Earth.

Dreams & Shaman Sorcery

Dreams were believed to be the source of shamanistic power. Shamans who possessed the ability to cure by means of power obtained in “great dreams” cured illness.”
