ARTIST STATEMENT
When observing the desert landscape, rather than acknowledging individual plants, rocks, sand, ground and sky, I tend to notice the varied shapes and textures of these objects. I respond to their juxtapositions in space. Some areas are of high contrast with distinct color and tone that present a visual ruggedness or boldness; others are less so and presented with atmospheric softness. A focus on these elements, and a multilayering process of paint application captures the spatial aspects of the actual landscape and produces a reflexive abstraction.
