ARTIST STATEMENT

My use of road signs as a painting substrate is a continuation of my interests in optical tricks, perception, and illusionary experiences. Based in geometry while combining labyrinths and masses, they are portals into another universe. The signs are reclaimed damaged objects from the road. I clean them and prepare them for paint, following some of the original reflective surface to shine through. A maze or labyrinth is then elaborately hand-painting over these pages. They symbolize the journey we take to reach or own center. The desire to recover a scarred item form the environment and turn it into a jewel is a transformation that reflects my own evolution. The paintings have scars, some of their past remains, but they are up off the ground, ready to interact and entertain. I call them “Roadsigns Mandalas” and see them as spiritual gateways to infinity.
