YUCCA VALLEY, CA — The new Yucca Valley Visual & Performing Arts Center has hired curator and esteemed artist Michael McCall as inaugural Executive Curator of its new regional gallery that will be an industry leader in state-of-the-art technologies and the largest exhibition space in the Joshua Tree National Park communities.  Opening this Spring, the new 15,000+ square foot Yucca Valley annex of the Hi-Desert Cultural Center will feature the new “Yucca Valley Art Gallery” in addition to specialized spaces dedicated toward visual arts, theatrical arts, music, dance, education, and administration.

Michael McCall received a Master of Fine Arts graduate degree from the University of Illinois and has exhibited his work in galleries and museums across the United States.  He served as preparator for the Washington Project for the Arts in D.C. and ran its outdoor public arts sculpture program.  He has resided in the city of Los Angeles for many years keeping a large studio near downtown prior to recently moving full time to Yucca Valley.  Although schooled as a painter, his artwork extends beyond painterly boundaries into areas of sculpture, photography, performance, and conceptual art.  McCall’s work has been described as a hybrid of abstraction and imagery, sometimes referred to as “Imagist.”  Represented by Timothy Yarger Fine Arts of Beverly Hills, McCall is also a reviewer for the venerate Fabrik Contemporary Art & Design magazine.

The wonderful assortment of inspirational sources, from the magnetism of the landscape, the light, the wildlife, the incredible energy found in the desert artists, all help create a smorgasbord of images and ideas coming out of the Hi-Desert. I intend to investigate these artists and exhibit their work to expand their talents and reputations beyond these desert shores.Michael McCall, Executive Curator | Yucca Valley Visual & Performing Arts Center, Hi-Desert Cultural Center
As anticipated, we received a great deal of exceptional applications for this new high-profile curatorial position. Michael’s experience, creativity, breadth of art history, and real-world working knowledge on how to be a successful artist edged-out the competition, and we are honored to bring him onto the team to represent our area and its finest.Jarrod Radnich, President | Hi-Desert Cultural Center

McCall is currently working with the Board to formulate the first year of programming for the Center’s new facilities in Yucca Valley.  He intends to exhibit the talented Hi-Desert artists, along with other exhibitions from outside the Morongo Basin.  For more information on the new Yucca Valley Visual & Performing Arts Center, contact info@hidesertculturalcenter.org.  For more information on Michael McCall, visit michaelmccall.org.
